Subnautica 2 Mods & VR — How to Install (UE5)

How to mod Subnautica 2: it runs on Unreal Engine 5, so Subnautica 1's BepInEx/Nautilus tools don't work. Where to get mods, the VR mod (UEVR) and EA caveats.

Can you mod Subnautica 2?

Yes — but first understand one thing: Subnautica 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, whereas the original Subnautica and Below Zero ran on Unity. That means the entire mature toolchain built up around the first games does not apply here. On top of that, the game is still in Early Access, so the modding scene is young and changing fast.

⚠️ The most common mistake: players coming from the first game go looking for QModManager, BepInEx, SMLHelper or Nautilus — those are all Unity-era tools and they do not work on Subnautica 2. Don't follow the old Subnautica 1 tutorials.

Unreal Engine 5, not Unity

This is the single biggest difference from the first games. Mods for a UE5 title usually ship as .pak files that load from the game's Paks folder, while deeper changes rely on injection frameworks aimed at UE5 (VR is the prime example — see below). In short, the first game's mod managers and APIs don't carry over; Subnautica 2 needs tooling built specifically for UE5.

Where do you get mods?

The main source right now is the Subnautica 2 section on Nexus Mods. Before you download, read each mod page's own instructions — UE5 mods don't install to one fixed place: some drop into Paks, some need an injector, some depend on a specific prerequisite. Each mod page usually lists its Requirements and install steps, and following those is the safest path.

General install steps

  1. Back up your save first. Mods can break at any time in Early Access, so copy your save before you start.
  2. Find the game folder. In Steam, right-click the game → Manage → Browse local files to reach the folder with the executable.
  3. Place files per the mod's instructions. Most .pak mods go in the game's Paks folder; if a mod says otherwise (an injector, a prerequisite framework), follow its page.
  4. Single-player only. Mods are only recommended in single-player; using a modded save in co-op causes unpredictable problems and may be incompatible with your teammates.

VR mod: how to play in VR

A lot of people search "subnautica 2 vr mod." The short answer: there's no official VR support, and the studio has said it's unlikely to arrive any time soon (unlike the first game, which added rudimentary VR a week into Early Access).

Because it's a UE5 game, though, the community uses UEVR (Praydog's universal UE injector) to get it running in VR — UEVR makes nearly any UE4/UE5 game playable in VR. On top of that, the community has built motion-controller mods so you can swim, scan and build with your own two hands, with much better stereo rendering than UEVR alone.

⚠️ The VR experience is still rough: running this game through UEVR in Early Access is very unstable — crashes, frame drops and visual glitches are common. Two practical tips: ① turn off autosave (it's the number-one crash source in VR), and ② lower the graphics and use performance options. See System Requirements.

Early Access caveats

  • Updates break mods. The game updates frequently, from hotfixes to big versions, and almost every update can invalidate mods — you'll usually have to wait for the mod author to catch up.
  • At your own risk. Third-party mods aren't officially supported, so any fallout (crashes, corrupted saves) is on you — which is why backups matter.
  • If you want stability, don't rush. Early Access is expected to run two to three more years, so tooling and content will change a lot. For a smooth, finished experience you're better off waiting for 1.0 or a more mature modding scene.

If all you want is to tweak values, teleport or unlock recipes, you may not need a mod at all — a lot of that is covered by the built-in console commands, which don't get wiped by updates.

FAQ

Q: Do Subnautica 1 mods / managers work?
A: No. The first game is Unity; this one is Unreal Engine 5, so QModManager, BepInEx, SMLHelper and Nautilus don't apply.

Q: Where do I download mods?
A: Mainly the Subnautica 2 section on Nexus Mods — install per each mod page's instructions and requirements.

Q: Is there official VR?
A: No, and it's unlikely soon. The community uses UEVR plus motion-controller mods for VR, but it's very unstable in Early Access.

Q: My VR keeps crashing.
A: Turn off autosave first (the top crash source in VR), then lower graphics — and accept that it's simply unstable for now.

Q: Will mods break my save?
A: They can, especially after an update. Always back up your save and use mods in single-player only.
