Subnautica 2 'Requires Fully Functional Fabricator' Fix
Stuck on 'Requires a Fully Functional Fabricator' in Subnautica 2? The Lifepod's is a damaged gate — build your own powered base Fabricator. Step-by-step fix.

What does "Requires a Fully Functional Fabricator" mean?
When you try to craft an advanced item — a Sonic Resonator, a Repair Tool and so on — at the Lifepod Fabricator and the recipe shows "Requires a Fully Functional Fabricator," it means the Fabricator in your Lifepod is damaged. It survived the crash but only well enough to make the most basic early recipes; everything more advanced is locked out.
💡 This is not a bug, and it can't be repaired. Unknown Worlds deliberately built the Lifepod Fabricator as a broken, partial unit to push you out of the crash site and into base building. The fix isn't to "repair" it — it's to build a brand-new Fabricator inside a base.
Why is the Lifepod Fabricator broken?
The Lifepod crash-landed on Zazura and its onboard Fabricator took heavy damage. It can still process the most basic starter recipes (batteries, basic tools), but the damage is permanent and nothing more advanced will craft. It's a deliberate progression gate that nudges you toward base building, the game's core loop. In other words, seeing this message is the signal that it's time to build your first base.
The fix: build your own Fabricator
It's simpler than it sounds — build a small base and place a powered Fabricator inside it. Three steps:
Step 1: Unlock the Habitat Builder
First you need the Habitat Builder, the tool that places every base structure. Scan 2 Habitat Builder fragments to unlock the blueprint. The closest spot is the Welcome Center, roughly 80–90m southeast of the Lifepod, with fragments on the southern side. Then craft it back at the Lifepod Fabricator:
Habitat Builder recipe (made at the Lifepod Fabricator): Titanium ×2 + Glass ×1 + Basic Battery ×1 + Copper Wire ×1
Step 2: Build a small powered base
You don't need anything big — one corridor + a hatch + a Fabricator + a Solar Panel is enough. Place them in order with the Habitat Builder:
| Part | Recipe | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Corridor | Titanium ×2 | The base shell — your Fabricator goes inside |
| Hatch | Titanium ×1 + Quartz ×1 | Entry / exit |
| Fabricator | Titanium ×1 + Copper ×1 + Quartz ×1 | A fully functional new Fabricator |
| Solar Panel | Titanium ×1 + Quartz ×2 | Power (daytime only) |
Gather the materials in one go so you're not back-and-forth: Titanium ×5, Copper ×1, Quartz ×4 (bring spare Quartz for a second Solar Panel in case night falls mid-build).
Step 3: Power is what matters
The Fabricator draws about 2 energy per second, so your base must generate electricity or neither the Fabricator nor its room will power on. Early on a Solar Panel (daytime) is the safest bet; build in a current zone and a hydro turbine powers it around the clock. See the Base Power Guide for the full breakdown.
⚠️ Space isn't the constraint — power is. A single tube corridor has room for a Fabricator, but with too little power it still counts as "not fully functional."
What does it unlock?
This base Fabricator has no damage, so every previously locked advanced recipe opens up — the Sonic Resonator, Repair Tool, High Capacity Air Tank and more. The "Requires a Fully Functional Fabricator" message is gone for good and your progression continues. For locations, layout and must-have modules, see the Base Building Guide.
Two easy traps
- Advanced recipes need sub-components: a new recipe appearing in the Fabricator doesn't mean its sub-recipes are unlocked too. Some advanced items need an intermediate part first — you actually have to hold the product in your hands before its lower recipes open up.
- The Fabricator is only tier two: refined materials like ingots (Titanium, Copper, Silver, Lead) and Strong Acid can't be made by either Fabricator — they need the Processor. Once your Fabricator is up, the Processor is usually the next thing to build.
FAQ
Q: Can I repair the Lifepod Fabricator?
A: No. It's an intentionally broken progression gate that can't be repaired or upgraded. The fix is to build a new one inside a base.
Q: What do I need to build a fully functional Fabricator?
A: First unlock the Habitat Builder (scan 2 fragments — the Welcome Center is closest), then build a small powered base and place a Fabricator inside (Titanium ×1 + Copper ×1 + Quartz ×1).
Q: What's the minimum material pack?
A: About Titanium ×5, Copper ×1, Quartz ×4 — enough for a corridor, hatch, Fabricator and one Solar Panel.
Q: I built it but still can't craft some items.
A: Two reasons — the item needs an intermediate part first (hold it to unlock the sub-recipe), or it's a refined material that needs the Processor, not the Fabricator.
Q: My Fabricator won't work / is greyed out.
A: Almost always no base power. The Fabricator uses 2 energy/s — make sure a Solar Panel or turbine is supplying it. See the Base Power Guide.
