What Is the World Tree?

The World Tree is one of the largest entities in Subnautica 2 — a Titan-class Leviathan that is, in essence, a non-hostile alien water-tree sitting at the very edge of the map. It is of huge ecological importance to all life on the planet Proteus.

The game also hints that this is not the only World Tree on the planet — others are scattered around the globe.

Where Is the World Tree?

Direction: Due north of your Lifepod
Region: Xanadu — beyond the current Early Access map border, and mostly inaccessible for now

The World Tree sits at the northern edge of the map. Reaching it means heading north past the edge of the current playable area, crossing the Void — the open deep-ocean zone.

How to Reach It (High Risk)

⚠️ Travelling there is currently ill-advised: the World Tree lies beyond the world border, in content not yet opened up during Early Access. The journey is extremely dangerous.

  • Cross the Void: the route to the World Tree runs through the Void, which is patrolled by Shiver Leviathans hunting in coordinated packs led by a female.
  • Stay undetected: it is still possible to reach if you avoid the Shiver Leviathans and go undetected.
  • Bring a vehicle: the area is extremely far from the starting biomes and surrounded by dangerous deep-ocean zones — travelling by Tadpole with upgraded depth modules is highly recommended.

Lore

An alien species lies in hibernation deep beneath the World Tree. They tried to heal the planet from its infection but failed, and retreated to a staging area under the tree's roots. The World Tree is central to Proteus's ecology and the game's story — far more than a piece of scenery, it is presented as a living pillar that the whole ecosystem depends on, which is why the developers placed it at the literal edge of the world as a long-term story hook.

Because it is a Titan-class organism rather than a structure, you cannot scan or harvest it like ordinary flora and fauna. For now its main value is exploration and lore: seeing the scale of it in person, and piecing together what the hibernating aliens were trying to do before they failed.

World Tree FAQ

Q: Is the World Tree a Leviathan?
A: Yes — it is classified as a Titan-class Leviathan, but it is non-hostile. Think of it as a colossal alien water-tree rather than a predator; it will not hunt you.

Q: Can you actually reach the World Tree right now?
A: It sits beyond the current Early Access map border in the Xanadu region, so travelling there is officially ill-advised. It is still possible to reach if you cross the Void and avoid detection by the Shiver Leviathan packs — but expect little "content" there yet.

Q: What is beneath the World Tree?
A: An alien species lies in hibernation under its roots. They once tried to heal the infected planet, failed, and retreated to a staging area below the tree.

Q: Is there only one World Tree?
A: No. The game hints that other World Trees are scattered across the planet; the one at the map's northern edge is simply the nearest to your Lifepod.

Q: What should I bring?
A: A Tadpole with upgraded depth modules, a full air supply, and patience for navigating around the Shiver Leviathans. Do not attempt the trip on foot or in an unupgraded vehicle.
