Leviathan Overview
Leviathans are the largest and most dangerous class of creatures in Subnautica 2. There are 5 Leviathan-class organisms plus 1 Titan-class organism (the World Tree). Leviathans cannot be killed — the developers have confirmed the game has no weapons. Your only options are evasion and escape.

Collector Leviathan
Type: Giant cephalopod predator (Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus)
Region: Multiple deep water locations
Threat level: Extreme — instant kill if caught outside vehicle
The Collector Leviathan is the most commonly encountered Leviathan. It's massive, with four clawed hunting tentacles and a huge bioluminescent structure atop its head. It actively hunts players and vehicles — being caught outside your Tadpole means instant death by consumption. For full locations, escape and scan tips, see the Collector Leviathan guide.
Known Spawn Locations
- Central deep water zones (4 fixed map markers)
- Waters near the Karakorum region
- Some upper-layer waters as well
Special Encounter: Deep Sea Squid Event
At a specific location (marked "Collector Leviathan (Deep Sea Squid)" on the map), a unique music track triggers before a massive Collector appears in squid form and attempts to swallow the player. This is a scripted encounter event of the same species, not a separate creature.
How to Survive
- Distance is your best defense — change direction immediately when you hear the deep rumbling
- The Tadpole's Cavitation Muffler significantly reduces detection
- The Camouflage biomod is effective against the Collector
- Deploy Distraction Flares to divert its attention if pursued
- Avoid building bases on Leviathan patrol routes
Deepwing Brooder
Type: Passive migratory Leviathan
Region: ~1200–1400m east of Lifepod, above 100m depth
Threat level: None — completely non-aggressive
The Deepwing Brooder is the only harmless Leviathan. They travel in groups of three in a line formation, continuously dropping Deepwing Egg Clumps from their undersides — one of the best food sources in the game.
Harvesting tip: Deepwing Brooders move surprisingly fast — you'll need the Tadpole or speed upgrades to keep up. Follow behind them and collect the dropped egg clumps. No danger whatsoever.
👉 See the full Deepwing Brooder guide for its location, egg farming and the Pavlova recipe.
Great Jaw (Giant Jaw Clam)
Type: Stationary giant creature
Region: Tufa Towers, ~280–350m southwest of Lifepod
Special: Contains harvestable Lithium deposits and blueprint fragments
The Great Jaw is a massive shell-like organism. The purple spheres at its center contain Lithium deposits that must be broken with the Sonic Resonator before collecting. Inside you'll also find 2 Portable Oxygen Dispenser blueprint fragments.
Harvesting tips:
- Bring an Air Bladder as emergency escape gear
- Bring a Sonic Resonator to break the Lithium deposits
- Swim quickly to the center to harvest — avoid touching the pink tendrils, which trigger the shell to snap shut
- Being trapped inside causes continuous pressure damage that can destroy your Tadpole
Shiver Leviathan
The pack hunter guarding the Void (beyond the map boundary): one female launches 3 males at you like projectiles that clamp your Tadpole and instant-kill. It can't be killed — crossing the orange boundary marker triggers it, and you're safe in bounds.
World Tree
Type: Titan-class organism (above Leviathan class)
Region: Xanadu — visible to the northeast of the Lifepod
Threat level: None — non-hostile
The World Tree is the largest organism on Proteus — a colossal aquatic tree extending above the ocean surface. It's ecologically vital to all life on the planet. The extinct Axum civilization left warnings that its root system has begun to rot. Currently unreachable (blocked by the Void and Shiver Leviathans), it serves as a story hook for future content.
Elusive Leviathan
The Elusive Leviathan is an unfinished, datamined creature — a dragon-like beast that flees rather than fights. It is not official Early Access content and can't be encountered in normal gameplay (only via mods/console).

General Survival Tips
Universal Leviathan survival strategy:
- Listen carefully: Leviathans produce distinctive sounds as they approach — stay alert
- Use decoys: Distraction Flares can temporarily divert a Leviathan's attention
- Install the Muffler: The Tadpole's Cavitation Muffler dramatically reduces detection
- Camouflage biomod: Effective against the Collector Leviathan
- Save often: Save your game before entering known Leviathan territory
- Don't fight: Leviathans cannot be killed — retreat immediately after an encounter
FAQ
Q: How many leviathans are in Subnautica 2?
A: Early Access has 5 leviathan-class creatures (the detailed ones are the Collector, Deepwing Brooder, Great Jaw and Shiver), plus the titan-class World Tree. The Elusive Leviathan is unfinished datamined content, not official. More will be added in the full game.
Q: Can you kill a Leviathan?
A: No. The developers have confirmed there are no weapons in Subnautica 2 — Leviathans are invincible. Your best strategy is always to evade and escape.
Q: How do I safely cross a Collector Leviathan patrol zone?
A: Install the Cavitation Muffler, equip the Camouflage biomod, carry Distraction Flares, and hug terrain features for cover. Traveling in the Tadpole is much safer than swimming.
Q: What's beyond the map boundary?
A: The Void, patrolled by the Shiver Leviathan (instant kill). You can see the World Tree in the distance. There's no explorable content beyond the boundary — don't cross it.
