Subnautica 2 Sulfur — Where to Find & How to Get It

How to find Sulfur in Subnautica 2: hand-pick the yellow crystals in the hot zone ~232m SE of the lifepod; the Graveyard has more. Plus Strong Acid uses.

What is Sulfur used for?

Sulfur is a reactive non-metal and a key catalyst material for early- to mid-game progression. Its most important use is synthesising Strong Acid (combined with Gold or Necrolei Cysts), and Strong Acid in turn gates a chain of items like Fiber Mesh and Power Cells. Sulfur also goes directly into the Repair Tool, the Advanced Wiring Kit, and the Heat Resistance Chip — so stockpiling early saves a lot of backtracking.

Where to find Sulfur

① Early spot (hand-pickable)
Location: about 232m southeast of the lifepod, near the cave that holds Chap's black box.
How to spot it: look for a yellow, flashing gaseous light on the seafloor. The Sulfur itself is yellow and is easily mistaken for Gold. You can harvest it by hand — no tool needed.

⚠️ This area runs hot. Approaching to mine triggers an "environment too hot" warning, and pushing deeper into the heat needs heat resistance gear (the Heat Resistance Chip) first.

② Bulk source: the Graveyard
Location: the hot zone east of the lifepod — in and around the Graveyard.
Sulfur is more plentiful here, but the environment is dangerous. To harvest in bulk, build the Sonic Resonator first and bring heat resistance plus an oxygen buffer.

How to harvest it efficiently

Scattered Sulfur can be picked up by hand; to gather at scale, mining nodes with the Sonic Resonator gives a higher yield. Before diving into the Graveyard heat, plan your route, top up oxygen, and don't overstay.

💡 Build a Scanner Station at your base to track Sulfur within 300m and cut out the searching.

What Sulfur is used for

ItemNotes
Strong AcidSulfur + Gold / Necrolei Cysts; Strong Acid then feeds Fiber Mesh, Power Cells and more
Repair ToolFixes jammed wreck doors and damaged vehicles/bases
Advanced Wiring KitA prerequisite for mid/late-game electronics
Heat Resistance ChipProtection in superheated environments like vents

Because Sulfur gates Strong Acid, and Strong Acid gates a long chain after it, a common beginner mistake is hitting a crafting wall with none on hand. Grab a few units on your first trip to the southeast hot zone, then come back for a bulk run with the Sonic Resonator and heat protection once you are chasing the Repair Tool, Advanced Wiring Kit, or vehicle parts.

FAQ

Q: Where do I find Sulfur earliest?
A: The hot zone ~232m southeast of the lifepod near Chap's black box cave — look for a yellow flashing gaseous light on the seafloor and pick it up by hand.

Q: How do I tell Sulfur from Gold?
A: Both are yellowish and easy to confuse. Sulfur shows up in hot areas with a yellow gaseous glow — scan it if you're unsure.

Q: Where is the most Sulfur?
A: The Graveyard hot zone to the east holds more, but it's dangerous — bring heat resistance and a Sonic Resonator for bulk mining.

Q: Do I need a tool to harvest it?
A: Hand-pick it; for bulk stockpiling the Sonic Resonator is more efficient.

Q: What is Sulfur mainly used for?
A: Synthesising Strong Acid (its core use), plus the Repair Tool, Advanced Wiring Kit, and Heat Resistance Chip.
