Overview
Ostrakonskelos periskopion — the hard-legged periscope. A social crab that shelters among stinging anemones. Enormous eyestalks mimic the surrounding anemones; if bitten off by a predator, each stalk is packed with unspecialized cells that quickly regenerate. The crab forages and returns nutrients to anemones while grooming them to clean parasites and infections. A third stalk behind the eyes is a reproductive organ — sperm disperses into seawater while eggs are placed among the anemones. Some researchers have observed multiple clowncrabs linking up in a chain, later separating into individuals.
Survival
Avoid disturbing it in its anemone shelter. It will defend itself if threatened.
