Overview
Pebbled Sporal (Sporal psephos). A moiety (two paired species) of a sponge and a coral — possibly a single chimeric organism. Unlike typical reef-building pairs, here the coral polyps grow a hard surface shell while the sponges continue to pump water — one inhales while the other exhales. Frequently found on the surface of larger dome coral structures, possibly in a parasitic or opportunistic relationship. Both coral polyps and sponge cells carry the full genome of both organisms — a genetic mystery.
