Overview

Jelly Lei (Anthobrachia hebesoros — the young stack of flower arms). Reproductive stage of a flower-like jelly. Represents the polyp phase of a jellyfish lifecycle. Despite its kelp-like appearance, hangs beneath surfaces and cannot photosynthesize in that position. Budding larvae beneath possess broad flat petals that will eventually merge into the adult jelly's bell. Contains photosynthetic symbiotes; purple color produced by photosynthetic retinal. The jelly lei's growth cycle has been accelerated by heat stress, causing early larval release to escape hot, oxygen-depleted water. Assessment: an environmental indicator of heat stress and biological disruption.
