Overview

Great jaw (tentatively Megamya sudacna — great clam that bites you). An enormous omnivorous clam with a dangerous defensive/feeding strategy. Like Earth bivalves, its body consists of two mineral shells connected by powerful adductor muscles. When the adductor tendons are disturbed, the shells snap shut, trapping prey inside; the clam then secretes domoic acid neurotoxin, causing nerve damage, short-term memory loss, and potentially death. Interior is lined with coral polyps that feed via photosynthesis — most nutrition comes from light rather than predation. Bioaccumulates lithium, expelling nodules (pearls) to prevent nerve interference. Assessment: critical source of lithium, but dangerous to dive near.

Survival

Do not disturb its adductor tendons — the closure reflex is triggered by contact. Approach to scan only, then back away.
