Overview

Although technically alive, gateway spires are constructs more akin to termite mounds. Built by a species of social krill (Krill krikophore — the ringbearer krill) too small to see unaided. The oldest part is the impeller ring: a loop of conductive metallic bacterial fibers surrounded by polyaniline-like polymer; when exposed to electrical current, it creates Lorentz force, pushing water through the ring and drawing in plankton, krill, and marine meiofauna. The support stalk resembles a human trachea — each disc is a coral polyp colony joined by tough coenenchyme, with a living diatom outer surface of silica shells in tacky mucus. The source of the electrical current powering the spire remains unknown. Assessment: possibly useful as a mobility aid.
