Overview
Awnworm. Dwells in hot, mineral-rich water, where its plumes collect hydrogen sulfide and other minerals. Each body segment develops five mineral-collecting plumes and contains its own heart. Grows from a chitinous holdfast that allows the entire organism to retract when threatened. Rather than sexual reproduction, buds off its uppermost segments to create new individuals — yet despite cloning, awnworms are genetically distinct. Note: many specimens show pores choked by thick, waxy fatty acids, a sign of environmental stress. Monitor for clues to reproductive cycle and ecological threats.
